So we have decided to present just one of many instances that has been in the news lately about a lady from Shreveport, Louisana who learned that she might have made one of the great mistakes of the century by selling a true hidden treasure: An original Picasso painting, potentially worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars but she had sold it at a garage sale.

Selling price you ask. $2.00 yes TWO DOLLARS.

The Lousiana lady who held the garage sale was helping out relatives of an an elderly neighbor who was an art collector whom passed away recently.

The deceased art collector had no local relatives and failed to sell his belongings at an estate sale the week before the garage sale was held, according to ABC news' report.

During the sale the Lousiana lady netted $500.00 that alone would make a garage sale worth one days worth of work but when she say the painting with "Picasso" written on it,she asked the deceased art collectors relatives about it and they said it was a fake and told not to worry about it.

So she sold it for $2, while the purchaser has found a hidden treasure likely to net hundreds of thousands of dollars if not more. So garage sales just for the sheer fact of having a chance to nab a painting like the one in this story makes it more than worthwhile.

Happy Bargain Hunting.

Finding a Costume for Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner you may be searching all over for a costume this year, but did it ever occur to you to check out a consignment store, a flea market, or a garage sale?

With any of these mediums you are sure to find a great deal on unique outfits that will be one of a kind and save you money from buying an expensive costume as well.

Happy Trick or Treating!

Looking for something to do this weekend?

<img style="DISPLAY: block; The problem is times are tough and kids usually don't realize that being frugal is sometimes a neccissity for survival.

So after shopping around at some garage sales last weekend and speaking with mom's whom have been shopping for back to school gear at yard sales for years are seeing more competition.

Here is a recent ad that was posted that suggested the items be used for back to school:

"Huge Yard sale all clothes $5 or less 8/15 (Elkridge, MD)
I am having a huge yard sale!

THIS WILL BE GREAT FOR SCHOOL SHOPPING IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY

ALL CLOTHES ARE $5 OR LESS....NAMEBRAND CLOTHES!!!

MENS JEANS $5
MENS SHIRTS AND SHORTS $3
DIFFERNT SIZES

WOMENS JEANS $3
WOMENS SHIRTS AND SHORTS $2
DIFFERENT SIZES

SOME CLOTHES ARE NEW WITH TAGS AND WITHOUT THE TAGS
SOME CLOTHES HAVE NEVER BEEN WORN

-AMERICAN EAGLE
-ABERCROMBIE
-HOLLISTER
-GAP
-OLD NAVY
-GUESS
-FREE PEOPLE
-THAT IS JUST A FEW BRANDS THAT WILL BE FOR SALE

I ALSO HAVE NEW AND USED SHOES
WOMENS/KIDS
-NIKES NEW AND USED
AND TONS OF DRESS SHOES FOR WOMEN

THERE WILL ALSO BE A FEW HOUSEHOLD AND BABY ITEMS! We packed bottled waters, measuring tapes, nutrition bars and $260 cash in my empty minivan along with my toddler son and his stroller.

Our quests differed, although we took the same path: She was looking for good bargains, with the open attitude of "I'll know 'em when I see 'em." I, however, had three specific goals: A coffee table, a sofa table and some kind of media storage. All were to be solid wood, with a decent, dark finish.

"But you could refinish them!" Carolyn insisted as we settled into the sluggish line of traffic and mapped out our strategy.

"But I won't," I explained as we unpacked my son and stroller from the oh-so-empty trunk (well, the stroller that is: Son was in the car seat in order to maximize available trunk space). "I'll take it home, leave it on the patio intending to strip it. It will get rained on and ruined, and I'll end up burning it or hauling it to Goodwill."

You see, I've done this before.

First stop: Boone County, KY in a large field where I've had great luck in the past. 40 vendors with canopies over sawhorse tables filled with glass vases, cardboard boxes full of Star Wars(r) figurines and the occasional Windsor chair joked and dickered with a healthy crowd of hundreds.

I didn't seen a single coffee table, which should have been a sign. Four hours later I took home with an empty trunk, a sweaty toddler and a full wallet of cash.

At the mega-sale stop at New Haven Elementary, however, Carolyn found her bargain: A brand-new quesadilla maker a young bride had received for her wedding and never used. Since Carolyn's kids are fans of quesadillas (and since Mr. Carolyn once scoffed at her buying the exact same small appliance for $29 new in stores), she was mighty thrilled with the $10 tag on the item. She was even more thrilled when the young bride said, "I'll take $5 for it."

Yes, large furniture items are lacking on this strip: This portion is a yard sale in the truest sense: Families and friends gather to unload outgrown baby clothes, random pieces of Great-Aunt Millie's china set and toys, toys, toys. I saw flatbeds full of Little Tykes headed either to Grandma's house or to consignment stores not so far away.

But the best part of the day was the people: Patient and generous strangers guided us into impossibly tight parking spaces in the grassy patches of highway 127/42. When, upon occasion, some fool honked at the cars in front of him, the crowd sneered at him in derision: If you want to get somewhere fast today, take the interstate! The rest of us are on a treasure hunt.

"I forgot sunscreen," I wailed, as we got out of the car on our southbound leg towards Warsaw, KY. A gentleman returned to his car to pull out a bottle so I could anoint my stroller-bound son. Grandpa and his two granddaughters were on their third annual 127 sale. Two years earlier, he made the whole pilgrimage down to Gadsden and back--so of course, as a master of the sale, he had sunscreen.

We chugged water and sweat it right back out again over the footstool just like the one my grandma had. Carolyn found a rusted out version of her school lunch box. We counted no fewer than four ab-flattening devices and more exercise bikes than you could shake a stick at.

But we don't need no stinkin' exercise bikes! Whether the day is brisk or crispy, we get our cardio walking through the sales. No coffee table? No matter. We had a blast. And later tonight, we'll have quesadillas.

Keri Stevenshttp://thekeristevens.blogspot.com

With an empty trunk, my best friend Carolyn and a stroller I joined the throngs at the (almost) northernmost portion of the World's Longest Yard Sale on highway 127 in Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati.

127 Yard Sale this week

The world's longest yard sale is happening this week and at 654 miles stretching from Alabama to Ohio it will surely attract a plethora of savvy bargain shoppers. I just wanted to share this piece about garage sales as an explanation of how this sale got to be so large: "It's getting that cool deal! Finding that bargain of a lifetime! Digging through pile upon piles of junk..... I mean antiques, and locating that last piece to make your set complete. The thrill of the hunt! Of course, there is the haggling over the price that makes the deal even sweeter." I know I do(so does my family). In today's economy, garage sales are an ideal way to buy things we need and want at a great price! All through the last baseball season, my son had been wanting a catcher's helmet and chest guard, but we could not afford it and it wasn't something he had to have for baseball. In May, while out and about looking for garage sales we found a helmet and chest guard for only $5.00!! It looked almost new! My son was so excited and he even bought it himself, which he was very proud of. Of course having a garage sale of your own is great too. We had one recently and made $150.00. It's a great way to clean out your house, while making some extra money. I just recently found a website that will track garage sales by typing in your zip code, or you can advertise your own sale. I know I do(so does my family). Recently I found a beautiful Nikon camera that allowed me to re-energize my brain to the pre-digital days when you took a picture and it didn't show up on the screen right away. So I took some beautiful shots this weekend and started to look for intriguing photography blogs and information when I stumbled upon a great photography blog in the southeastern Pennsylvania region by a photographer named Bonnie: http://johnandbonnieplustwo.blogspot.com/ where she displays wonderful photos of her young ones as well as another Bonnie photographer for weddings in the Maryland region: http://www.accentphotosbybonnie.com/mp_includes/body.asp So I must say thank you to the Bonnie Photographers as they have given me the inspiration to pick up an old hobby that I would never have re-stumbled upon if it weren't for shopping at a yard sale this past weekend.

The benefits of shopping at a garage sale goes beyond just the bargains and money saved but to the old hobbies that are reinvigorated.

Getting a Permit for a sale

With a very strong garage sale season well under way you should always check with the rest of the neighborhood and the proper authorities to make sure that you have the required permit if neccessary.

"For example some upscale cities, such as Beverly Hills, California, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, require that the homeowners apply and pay for a yard sale permit, and even with that homeowners in most neighborhoods who are charged for a permit can still only hold yard sales in the back of their homes and our issued a limited number of permits. Well guess what it is so every chance that you get to save a few dollars, take it as it will certainly add up in the long run.
Finding places outside of the toy store and Babies R’ Us to purchase baby items at steep discount to the retailers is s golden opportunity to help inflate your bank account.
If you head out your front door or any given Saturday or Sunday morning you will more than likely notice that America is encapsulated in a reinvigorated pastime known as Garage Sales.
A parent recently was able to purchase a once expensive Dollhouse that has never been used for $5.00. The original cost of this doll house was $54.99. Some other great finds for babies at a yard sale consists of fisher price like items ranging from cribs, books, stroller, video games, electronics toddler gyms, and jumparoo’s. .
All of these items and tons more are available every week and all can be purchased for pennies on the dollar thus creating a huge savings for parents and the best part is that all prices are negotiable.
Towards the end of the summer parents will find that yard sales are a great way to purchase back to school clothes and supplies for the children at extremely large discounts. So if your sale is taking place towards the end of the summer be sure to include childrens items as the back to school shopping season most certainly includes garage sales.

So next time your young one is in need of some toys or necessities like a stroller search around the neighborhood or the internet for a Garage Sale!

The art of the garage sale

The Art of the Garage Sale

Garage sales are a great way to not only find great deals but make some extra cash. As I scour my house to find treasures to sell at my garage sale I am reminded of a few pointers I have picked up as a garage sale buyer myself. Here are my thoughts on making your garage sale as successful as can be.

Have all of your items for sale in the best possible condition. If it is dirty clean it, broken fix it, ect. Just like you don't want someones dirty old stuff no one will want yours. Make sure it is appealing to the eye. Use the standard of would I buy it?
Make your garage sale appealing to the eye. Display your items in an attractive way. Hang up the clothes, line a table with toys. Consider bringing out a bookshelf or nice piece of furniture to display items on. Take your cue from stores and think of how you prefer to see things displayed. Bins and baskets are discouraging and do not attract attention from the casual browser.
Be realistic in your pricing and also be willing to barter. If the idea is to get rid of the items then be open minded and realistic when dealing with offers. As you are de-cluttering your house throughout the year, collect the items you are willing to sell and place them in your designated area. At our home, we have a garage sale closet. It is in our basement and is even large enough to hold items like furniture or bigger sized toys.
Price your items before you place them in your designated area. This will save you time and perhaps your sanity when it comes time to set up for your sale. This especially comes in handy when you are cleaning out clothes. As I clean out my kid’s closets, I tag each item before I put it in the storage bag. The colored circle sticker tags work best for me. Another trick to pricing clothes is to safety pin items that belong in a set together and then label the price sticker as such (2 pcs., 3 pcs., etc.)
When pricing your items, there are several things to take into consideration. The condition, age, and brand of your items are all factors in setting a price. This is especially significant when pricing children’s clothing. You cannot expect to get the same price for a cute dress from Walmart as you can for an adorable dress you purchased from Gymboree. Likewise, clothing that is several years old will not warrant the same price as clothing that is in current style. If an item is in excellent condition or new with tags, you’ll have the upper hand in price negotiations.
When setting up for your sale, organization is the key. Place like items together and label as such. This is especially important when setting out your clothing. I like to organize my tables by gender, size, and season. I then label each area with a sign. For example, Girl 12 mos. Winter. This helps people navigate your sale easier. I also like to hang clothing up to draw attention to it more.
The days and times of your sale are an important factor, too. In our area, the best days are Friday and Saturday. Since I always set up on Thursdays, I usually open up on Thursday evenings too. This gives shoppers plenty of options. I tend to have people come back all 3 days. On Saturday, I typically run a half price sale in an attempt to move things out.
Now that you are all set up for your sale, you need to get people there. Advertising is the key to a great sale. If no one knows about it, how do you expect to sell anything? In your advertisement, be sure to include the days, time, location, and a brief description of your items. Our local newspaper has a garage sale listing section. In my opinion, the cost to advertise is well worth it. If other people in your neighborhood are having a sale, then put one ad in the paper and split the cost. I also post signs on telephone poles throughout our town and at local stores, restaurants, the library, or community center. Always be sure to ask before you post anything and also check with your city hall regarding their signage policies. I also place large garage sale signs with arrows leading to my house.
Your shoppers have arrived. Now what? Being friendly, flexible, and willing to negotiate is important in moving items. Remember, the more you sell, the less you will have to deal with in the end. After all, you are selling things you don’t want or use anyway so any amount that you earn is a bonus. In addition, if people feel you are fair, they will come back when you have your next one. I have several return shoppers each year.
Once the sale is finished, I go through the items that are left and separate them into 3 categories: Keep, Donate, or Trash. Items that I feel are worth hanging on to for the next sale get bagged up and put back into the garage sale closet. Items that have been through several garage sales and aren’t worth holding on to get donated. Lastly, items that are in poor condition get tossed out.

As a mother of two little ones, shopping garage sales is as equally important as having my own. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was able to purchase her entire wardrobe for her first year at garage sales. I found like new, name brand clothing for next to nothing. After she was finished wearing them, I put them out at my own garage sale and made all of my money back. If I had shopped regular retail, I would have never broke even.

Here are a few tips for shopping garage sales:

Know where you’re going before you head out. If you plan to shop several sales, have a game plan. In my opinion, neighborhood sales are the way to go. On that note, take note of the neighborhood. An area with lots of families is going to have different items than an area with older couples such as a retirement community.
The old saying, “The early bird gets the worm,” applies to garage sales perfectly. The good items that are priced well will be gone within minutes, so if there is a sale you don’t want to miss, be sure to get there at the start. On the contrary, if you want more room for negotiation, shopping the garage sale at the end is the better way to go.
Remember, all prices are negotiable. If you see something you really like or need, pick your bottom line price (the most you are willing to pay), start lower than that and work your way up to it. Sometimes, you may have to walk away. Unless it is a one of a kind item, chances are you will find it somewhere else. Be conscious of the seller’s feelings and avoid telling them that their item isn’t worth what they have it priced at. Common courtesy is the key.
When purchasing toys or other electronic items, be sure to plug them in or turn them on to see if they work. If I am in search of toys, I like to bring extra batteries and try them out first. Even if you don’t have batteries, open the battery compartment to make sure it isn’t corroded.
When purchasing baby items like car seats, cribs, swings, playpens, and strollers, be wary. You can call the 800 number or check the manufacturers website for recalls. Check www.cpsc.gov for recalls also.

Helpful tips courtesy of Megan from: http://www.savingourcents.blogspot.com

Showcase Your Savings

To some novices you might be surprised about the hidden treasures to be had for next to nothing at a Garage Sale and unlike a retail store prices are all negotiable.

The savings from shopping at Garage Sales will ultimately add up in the long run and the money you may make selling off your old junk will certainly help at the end of the day.

At a sale you may wonder why someone would purchase some of these items sitting on the lawn in front of you and than you may think back to some prior purchases you made and how much you spent at the time you purchased some of the same items that lie before you.

The National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®) has launched a site for all of you bargain hunters called Spendster.org that gives everybody the chance to confess about what they unnecessarily purchased and how much you have saved from being frugally sound.

Invite anyone to share their savings and make a video for the site showcasing their dollars saved thanks to Yard Sales. When you attend a sale timing is everything. If it is an item that you really want than you are more than likely going to be an early bird and pay near the asking price. If you want to wait it out and see if anybody else passes up an item that you want than you’re in a much stronger bargaining position.
So step one is
1. Find your Item
2. See the asking price
3. Think about what its worth to you and if you will use it
4. Try to Justify the asking price
5. Offer the lowest reasonable price that you could imagine the seller taking for the item. The worst that happens is that they say sorry I won’t take less than x amount of dollars for that.
6. Take 10% off of that x number and make the deal happen. So if you offered $6.00 for a table and the owner said I won’t take less than $10.00 offer $9.00 and more than likely you have a deal.

Hopefully these tips come in handy during your next sale and remember “One individual’s trash is another’s treasure”

Hosting a Garage Sale: Part 1

Hosting a Garage Sale: Part 1
Garage sale season has already started in some parts of the country and for others, it is just around the corner. Garage sales are a great way to clean the clutter from your house and make some quick cash at the same time. This series is going to break down how to hold a successful garage sale into manageable steps. We have a sale every year or two and I constantly hear that it is too much work for the money but hopefully this series will help you see otherwise. I'm not saying having a sale is for everyone, but it can be easier with a little planning. Today's focus is on cleaning up the clutter.First, designate a place in your house to hold garage sale items. I keep a bag in my bathroom closet for garage sale items. Once it is full, it gets moved to a shelf in the garage. Keeping it in a handy space allows me to get rid of items as I come across them instead of waiting and forgetting about them.Next, set a date for the sale. If you are like me, you will say you are having a sale but never actually get around to it. I find if I set a date, it is much more likely to happen. We put a date in May on our calendar months ago and it has really helped me prepare for the upcoming sale. Then, start cleaning up the clutter a little at a time. Earlier, I talked about simplifying by reducing clutter and this is the same concept. We've been going through every single room in our house in order to rearrange it for a new baby. You do not have to go to such extremes, but find a problem area or two and tackle them. You might just be motivated enough to keep going. When the clutter is gone, you will feel better, be more organized, and have some great items for an upcoming garage sale. Feel free to put anything and everything into your garage sale pile as you will be amazed at what will sell. Usually what I think is junk sells right away and I'm always surprised.Your challenge this week is to tackle one area in your house (it doesn't even need to be a whole room) and start cleaning it out in preparation for an upcoming garage sale.
Check out many additional great tips on living great at:Living with Less

How to Advertise a Garage Sale on the Internet

Why Advertise on the Internet
Advertising on the internet is certainly going to give you more exposure to your sale than traditional media sources such as the penny saver and the local newspaper. It is easier for buyers to find what they are looking for allowing them to filter sales with items that they are trying to find. By using the internet you are allowing millions of users to access information and find that hidden gem. It is easier to receive driving directions and you will no longer need to spend valuable time calling for directions because the internet can take care of all of that for you. You can display pictures and descriptions of your items without having to be limited to three to five lines and the pictures can be in color with no limit to them.

How to Advertise on the Internet
Finding a website that is user friendly for both buyers and sellers is important. The website must have all of the aforementioned features and this is why we recommend garage sales tracker as one of the premier website to advertise garage sales. Their site allows you to post your pictures and they help increase exposure to get the word out about your sale.

How to Find and successfully throw a sale

If your anything like me and you walk into your house and you find bags of clothes, toys that havent been used or in many cases even opened since Barbie dolls were released then you might be in need of putting together a garage sale/yard sale. In todays society we all could use a little bit of extra cash or would love to find great bargains on everything from clothes, books, toys, furniture, household goods you name it.To solve my clutter problem I put together a garage sale and to my suprise I was able to sell a ton of my stuff and raised three times the amount of money that I expected. The first step is to decide what you want to sell and what not to sell. If there is something that your saying to yourself I really don't want to get rid of this well than you probably should. In most cases it will continue to sit around the house and clutter your surrondings.Remember price sells so if you have some very nice items for sale at a great price it will sell.Setting up the sale may be the most diffucult part the best thing in you can do is to take pictures of your items and place advertisments online. When I used this site it made everything very easy to contact the buyers so that they could see what items where for sale, I could list prices and it allowed a map for prospective visitors. The last suggestion I have is to just sit back relax and have fun with the sale you will meet a plethora of people and being kind and a hard bargainer will help the day fly by.

Things that will benefit you in the future

I could talk about our new president Barack Obama, Paris Hilton, who is going to win the super bowl, trips to Las Vegas and hanging out with Mandy Moore, instead I want to talk about things that I feel will benefit you in the future.
When the time comes for your spring cleaning and you say to yourself lets gather all of the items that we no longer need throw it out on the lawn and pay 1-800-JUNK-USA to haul it away.
While using college hunks that haul junk is a great idea, I have an idea of what to do before you pick up the phone: Have a yard sale, by doing this you are now enabling yourself to rid yourself of items that may be useless to you but helpful to others that are in need.
If you have lots of clothes you can price all items at $1.00 a piece and shoes at $10.00 and see what the bargain hunters take a liking to. Toys are great sellers as struggling parents always need good deals for their children. Furniture is always a big hit if there is a local university in the area than be sure to post flyers around the school as students love furniture, Old CDs, records, and tapes are harder sellers these days but you must always remember price sells. It is better to get rid of all of your stuff at a low price than to not get rid of it at all. Instead of Junking your stuff Sell it and whatever is leftover you know a good hauler!!!
I recently threw a sale and used a multitude of ways to advertise it. The most common seems to be the newspaper classified advertisements as well as local signs pointing to my lawn. The next step I went to was to search for online promoters of sales. I found two very useful sites the first being Upcoming which is a Yahoo! owned site that anyone can list a current event that is “upcoming” in their area. The other site I used was Garage sales tracker which was a safe and easy way to list my site as it provided visitors directions to the sale and they happily help promote your sale through innovative ideas and marketing techniques.
In the end I was left with a few items after my sale and went down to the local goodwill with the extra $85.00 I just raised and donated all of the leftover items.
All in all it seemed like a win-win situation and I am glad to share my experiences with you.
